Fran Chaine, 76, with her husband and her son by her side, died at Queen's Hospital in Honolulu on September 16, 2021 after a three-year battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Jean-Paul Chaine and her son, Jean-Paul Liloa Chaine, her daughter-in-law, Llasmin, and two grandchildren, Gabriel and Sybella Chaine, all of Honolulu. She was predeceased by her parents, James and Catherine (Withey) Carney, her sister Margaret, her brother James and survived by her sisters Helen Cronin of Florida, Maureen Carney, Cathy Marano, Susan Marra and Teresa Carney, all of Connecticut, brothers Jack and Tim Carney of Florida, and numerous nieces and nephews. Frances Elaine Carney was born in Oakville, CT, the third oldest of 10 children, graduated salutatorian from Watertown High in 1962, and attended the University of Connecticut. After her marriage to Jean-Paul Chaine, Fran finished her B.S. in Chemistry, and then earned a M.S. in Chemistry, a M.A. in Education, and a M.A. in Curriculum Development, all from the University of Hawaii. She and her husband lived around the world, first in New Orleans, then on to Senegal, Swaziland, Senegal-again, Bangladesh, Honolulu, and the islands of Pohnpei and Saipan, until they retired back to Honolulu in 2009. Her family remembers that no matter how many time zones away she lived, Fran knew exactly when to call to wish each of them a Happy Birthday. While Jean-Paul worked overseas in public health, Fran taught chemistry at Roosevelt High School in Honolulu in the early 1990s and later science at the Community College of Micronesia. After her retirement, she had the time to exercise with water aerobics at the Palolo and Kapalono District pools, paddle with the Waikiki Beach Boys, regularly attend the Honolulu Symphony and Kumu Kahua Theater, judge the Science Fair annually and volunteer on Saturdays at Hanauma Bay. Fran had a generous heart. Her many friends remember her pleasure in cooking and serving delicious feasts, entertaining friends on Christmas morning, and organizing picnics at Queen's Surf and Magic Island. And, of course, every meal was followed by her favorite treat, coffee ice cream. Fran donated her body to the UH School of Medicine. Due to COVID, there is no memorial service planned at this time.
