A memorial for Setsuko "Sets" Yoshida will be held at Hosoi Mortuary in Honolulu at 4:00 pm on January 22, 2022. Sets was born on September 7, 1926 to Teichi and Shigeko Tomita and grew up in Haleiwa on Oahu's north shore. Her husband, Yoshio "Patrick" Yoshida, a WWII 442nd veteran died in 2000. She moved to New York City shortly after to be with her son Abram and his partner Ty-Ranne Grimstad. When the COVID epidemic hit the US in 2020, NYC became the epicenter of the virus and it claimed her life on April 7, 2020 when she died of complications at the age of 94. She had a storied and honored career as a nurse caring for the sick at Queen's Medical Center. Her head nursing career spanned Pediatrics, Oncology and Communicable Diseases which eventually became an AIDS unit when that epidemic hit in the early 1980's. She was recognized for her work by the Life Foundation in 1986. She was a deep follower and practitioner of the Nembutsu path and after retirement she helped to run Project Dana at the Hongwanji Betsuin Temple.
