Born in Sacramento, California, on August 8, 1937, his family was sent to Tule Lake Internment Camp when he was 4 years old. He attended Grant Union High School in Sacramento, followed by undergraduate studies at American River College and UC Berkeley, then earned a degree in dentistry at the University of Michigan. After graduation, he completed a dental internship at Queen's Hospital in Honolulu and served as an Army dentist in South Korea before opening a private practice in Honolulu. He was an active member of the Hawai'i Dental Association and a Diplomate of the American Dental Association.
He enjoyed fishing, scuba diving, and spearfishing, and volunteered at the Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden Fish Pond in his later years. Donations may be made in his honor to Friends of Honolulu Botanical Gardens. At the family's request, no public service will be held.
