ALBERT J. MARIANI
ALBERT J. MARIANI
Albert J. Mariani passed away on Feb. 14, 2022, at his home in Honolulu. He was 72. Born in 1949 in Springfield, Mass., he attended Cathedral High School (Springfield, Mass.) and graduated from New York Medical College in 1975. He completed his surgical residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., in 1980.

Making Hawaii his home in 1980, he started a fulfilling and productive career as a urologic surgeon and administrator at Hawaii Permanente Medical Group (Kaiser Permanente). For much of his 29-year tenure at Kaiser, he was chief of surgery. He also developed a specialized technique for removing kidney stones and served in numerous leadership roles.

Albert was married to his wife, Aurora (Cunanan) Mariani M.D., for 32 years. Together they enjoyed traveling, exploring many different states and countries. He was an avid reader and loved learning new technologies.

In his retirement, he worked part time in urology clinics to fill the care gap on neighbor islands, focused on his various hobbies and took pleasure in spending time with his two grandchildren. He was particularly proud of authoring and publishing his first book in 2020. The book, "Evolving a Culture of Medical Excellence," details the history of the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group. In recent years, his nephew John Belizon was his daily caregiver, trusted companion and right-hand man until Al's passing.

Albert was predeceased by his parents Mary (Cavanaugh) and Albert C. Mariani. In addition to his wife and nephew, he is survived by sister, Marita Mariani; daughter Joy Arcayan; son-in-law Anthony Arcayan; two grandchildren; numerous nephews and nieces. Services will be held Tuesday, March 8, at 3 p.m. at Diamond Head Mortuary. No flowers please.

Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased
