Having found his forever home in Hawaii, he left the Navy in December 1970. He was an excellent foreign and sports car mechanic. He owned Joe's Texaco in Kalihi, Waipahu bug Works and taught auto mechanics at Windward CC for 8 years. He had a 100-ton captain's license which allowed him to captain charter fishing boats out of Kewalo Basin. He started part time during college vacations and eventually did it full time. He was an accomplished woodworker and liked making improvements to their Halawa Heights home and his son's home. He enjoyed creating gifts for his family and friends. Joe loved fishing and racing sports cars.
Joe died December 3, 2020 at his Aiea home. He is survived by Betty, his wife of 58 years; son Chris (Agnes); daughter Karen Bulusan (Felipe, Jr.); grandchildren: Daniel, Jesse, and Gianna.
Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, March 15, 2022 at Aiea United Methodist Church, 99-101 Laulima St., Aiea. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. followed by his service at 10:00 a.m. His ashes will be interred at The National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl at 1:00 p.m.
