Myles Akimitsu Murakami
Myles Akimitsu MurakamiMyles Akimitsu Murakami, of Honolulu, went home to Jesus on February 27, 2022, at the age of 68. He was born to Gilbert and Janet Murakami in Honolulu, the youngest of four children. After graduating from Farrington High School in 1971, he earned his degree in Business Administration from the University of Hawaii. In 1973, he met Renee Watanabe, and they wed in 1976.

After graduating from the University of Hawaii in 1976, Myles landed his first job as an underwriter trainee for Industrial Indemnity. This was the beginning of his 42 years in the Hawaii insurance industry. He went on to work at Johnson & Higgins, which then became Marsh & McLennan. His final mark in the industry was made as the President of Atlas Insurance Agency in 2001. Myles was committed to keeping Atlas as Hawaii's largest, locally-owned insurance agency and ensure that the founder's vision of service based on integrity and trust continued. Myles retired from Atlas as the CEO in 2018 but went on to serve on the boards of Atlas and Hawaii Risk Management Holdings until his passing.

Family was also important to Myles, something he often mentioned. He lived by his two favorite Japanese sayings: "Okage sama de" and "Kodomo no tame ni." This was reflected in the way he expressed his love to his immediate and extended family along with how he supported his children and grandchildren. He was proud of their accomplishments, whether in school or in sports. Myles became affectionately known as "Papa" and always tried his best to help raise his grandchildren, especially in his retirement years. He also enjoyed traveling, watching K-dramas, cooking, golfing and singing karaoke with family and friends.

Myles was predeceased by his parents, Gilbert and Janet Murakami. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 45 years, Renee Murakami; daughter, Kellie (Tom) Yang; son, Grant Murakami; grandchildren, Christian, Camden and Carissa Yang; sisters, Janice (Harold) Niizawa, and Phyllis (Daniel) Yoneyama; brother, Jason (Lois) Murakami; and many nieces and nephews.

Myles' generosity, kindness, easygoing disposition, smile, innovative mindset, care for others before himself, and desire for generations after him to succeed will be genuinely missed. We look forward to seeing you again one day in heaven, Dad.
