FAMILY PLACED OBITUARY

Sumiko Koga Watanabe
Sumiko Koga Watanabe, 106, passed away peacefully in Aiea on March 17, 2022. She was born on Stillman Lane in Honolulu on January 9, 1916, and grew up in Olaa on Hawaii Island. She was the sixth of Morito and Tori Kai Koga's nine children, all of whom predeceased her.

Sumiko and her late husband Frank Masami Watanabe owned and operated Watanabe Liquor and Sundries in Chinatown and later in the Alapai area. In retirement, in addition to helping care for her four grandsons, she found time and energy to fulfill her creativity and curiosity. She embraced yoga, ikebana, Hawaiian quilting, needlepoint and ultimately, her bonsai practice.

Sumiko is survived by three children: Mark (Anne dec.), Ruth (Ted) Sakai and Esther (David) Awaya. She also leaves four grandchildren: Matthew Sakai (Cindy Szeto), Christopher (Karen), Eric (Sandi) and Jeremy Awaya; ten great grandchildren, 11 great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

We thank Dr. Owen Kaneshiro for 35 years of unfailing care of Mom. We are grateful for Digna and Myra Galera's professional care, humor and loving kindness shown to Mom in her final months.

Private services were held.
