As an independent woman, Fumi worked for a family in Kealakekua in order to attend Konawaena High School. She was the first in her family to pursue a post high school education by completing cafeteria management vocational training at McKinley High School. Fumi began working as a Cafeteria Manager at Ft. Shafter Elementary and retired from Benjamin Parker Elementary.
Fumi had a dream to see the world. After retirement, she completed a trip to Australia and continued to travel twice a year until the age of 90. Her niece Marge Yuen confirmed that Fumi travelled to all continents except Antarctica.
During the next phase of her life, Fumi decided to maintain her independence by moving to the Pohai Nani Independent living quarters. During this phase, she cherished two events. At 100 years old, she was able to attend her granddaughter Emiko's graduation from Mid-Pacific Institute. Also, in 2021, Fumi and her cousin, Kathleen Komo, were recognized as the few living alumnus of Konawaena High School's 100th anniversary celebration.
The Komo family was very important to her, as she enjoyed her Kona summer and Christmas visits and later annual Oahu Christmas family gatherings. Fumi was especially appreciative of the assistance of her niece Ruby Saito and family.
Fumi is survived by her son, Robert, daughter in-law Daphne, and granddaughter, Emiko; brothers, Richard and David Komo; sister, Emiko Kaneko; sister-in-law Elaine Komo, and cousin Kenneth Komo. She is pre-deceased by her brothers, Herbert, James, and Mitsugi Komo; sisters, Michie Kamitaki, and Itsuko Takamura.
Fumiko's life was celebrated on June 12, 2022 at Hosoi Garden Mortuary. She will be interred at Hawaiian Memorial Park.
