He played quarterback on the St. Louis 1945 championship varsity football team. After high school, Bill enrolled at the University of Hawaii. Bill embarked on a 20-year career in the U.S. Army, rapidly advancing in the ranks and retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He then accepted a position at Hawaiian Telephone Company, beginning a second career that spanned 16 years and the attainment of the position of Health Services & Safety Director, retiring for the last time in 1987. In 1952 prior to his first Army posting overseas, Bill married his best friend and sweetheart, Pearl Maile Luning who preceded him in death in 2016. "Mike" (Kaleo) and daughters Kaala Coleman, Manu Kaiama (Dexter); 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son Paul H. "Gruff" (Dianne).
