In the late 1940s and 1950s, she danced the hula professionally on the mainland and in Europe. She belonged to the Ahahui Kaahumanu, Chapter 1.
While performing in Buffalo, New York, she met and married her husband, Peter T. Manicas, in 1960. They returned to Hawai'i in 1988. After her return, Shirley, called "Ti" by all, taught in the DOE's Kupuna program for many years. She was very proud of her teaching and the opportunity to pass on to younger generations her knowledge of the Hawaiian language, lore, and culture.
Her husband, son and daughter preceded her in death.
A private ceremony is planned.
