
May was born in Kaneohe in 1927, as her family's third generation in Hawaii. Her parents' Elsie Lam & Thomas Chang Ayau had 4 children, May, Vincent, Jean, and Thomas, Jr.
May attended St. Ann School in Kaneohe, graduated from Maryknoll School in 1945 and UH in 1949, with a degree in Psychology. In 1950, May attended University of Illinois pursuing a Masters of Library Science. While there, she met her husband & had 7 children, Mary, Genie, Marcus, Amy, Lydia, Bradley, and Howard.
May returned to Hawaii in 1972 and spent the majority of her time since her return working & volunteering at the Kailua Public Library. May was known for her love of non-fiction books (especially WWII), playing piano & mahjong and her many travels. In May's most recent days, she lived with her daughter and son-in-law in Makakilo staying busy with puzzles and her many books.
May is survived by her brother, Thomas, seven children, twelve grandchildren, and nine great- grandchildren.
A private Celebration of Life was held according to May's wishes at her daughter's home in Makakilo. Donations may be made to the Friends of Kailua Library in May's honor.
