Michael Tokioka formerly of Honolulu, passed away in Henderson, Nevada on March 31, 2021. He was born on November 16, 1955, and was preceded in death by father Juichi Tokioka and mother, Mae Sonoko Tokioka. He is survived by brothers, Stanford (Sandra) and Carleton (Iris), nephew, Taylor and nieces, Aubrey and Jennifer (Jason) and grandnieces, Brianna and Jenna.He was a devoted and loving son, beloved brother and uncle, and loyal friend. Michael was a former president of Tomigusku Sonjinkai and former member of HUOA (Hawaii United Okinawa Association) where he helped with the International Student Exchange program with Okinawa. He also volunteered many hours with MDA along with other family members.
Michael graduated from Radford High School in 1973, from the University of Hawaii, then later went to Alaska to finish his Master's degree. After a brief career in Alaska, he moved back to Hawaii.
He had an exemplary career with the Hawaii Department of Education as a Social Studies teacher, Vice Principal at Kalani High School, principalships at Mountain View Elementary School, Waiakea High School, and finally, Aiea High School from 1999 through 2013. He was the Co-Chairperson of the Hawaii High School Principals Compact and a strong supporter of Pacific Asian Affairs Council (PAAC). Michael served as a mentor for many new educational officers who went on to become outstanding principals and leaders in our schools. As the Governor's Special Assistant for Education Policy, he was the coordinator for Hawaii's education blueprint.
Michael had a passion for traveling which took him to Japan, Las Vegas, and many other destinations. He was also a strong supporter of University of Hawaii athletic teams. Michael finally realized his dream of retiring and moved to Henderson, Nevada in 2016.
A Celebration of Michael's life will be held on Monday,
September 5, 2022, at John A. Burns Hall - Ke'ehi Memorial Park,
2685 N. Nimitz Hwy, Honolulu.
