Elsie Tuttle died peacefully on January 18, 2022, after a brief illness. Elsie was born in Springfield, Illinois, to Gertrude and Percy Smith. After graduating as valedictorian of her Pinckneyville HS class, she headed to Illinois College, where she met Dan W. Tuttle, Jr. They married after Elsie's graduation. Following three years in Laramie, where Dan taught at the U. of Wyoming and Elsie earned her master's degree in Spanish, the couple moved to Honolulu in 1950. While Dan taught at UH Manoa, Elsie taught languages at Honolulu Christian College and embraced Hawaii's wealth of cultures and traditions. Elsie raised three children and tended to her elderly father, trading her teaching career for more than 60 years of community service. Among the many boards on which she served, usually in a leadership position, are the Oahu YWCA, the League of Women Voters, Friends of the Library, the UH Women's Club, the Women's Board of Missions, and Arcadia. At Central Union Church, Elsie served as trustee, church moderator, and also as president of the Women's League. For nearly five years, she was Executive Director of the Women's Board of Missions, where she took pleasure in welcoming visiting missionaries and in representing the organization on trips to Micronesia and Japan. An inveterate reader, Elsie drove and read for the blind and was a long-time board member and champion of the Friends of the Aina Haina Library. An avid hiker, she spearheaded two hiking clubs. Travel and music were additional passions. Elsie's husband of 57 years and son David predeceased her, as did her parents and sister Vera. She is survived by daughter Kay (Richard Hancock), son Daniel III (Carolynn Bell-Tuttle), daughter-in-law Marilyn Lau Tuttle, and three grandchildren, Parker, Nanea, and Hallie. A celebration of Elsie's life will be held at Central Union Church on Saturday, October 29, 10:00 a.m. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Elsie's memory to the Friends of the Aina Haina Library, Central Union Church, the Arcadia Foundation, or a non-profit of your choice.
