Sally Crowell
Sally CrowellSally Kealaonapuaikaluaopele (Fo) Crowell, of Hawaii Kai, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2022. Sally was born on September 22, 1941 on the island of Oahu. Sally had a beautiful childhood with adventures and travel, and even lived in Oregon for a while as well. Sally's younger years were spent in Kaaawa, and Kaneohe. Sally was a graduate of Saint Francis School, and that school was always so near and dear to her heart. Sally Crowell started her professional hula dancing career right out of Highschool and continued dancing as a career for more than 15 years. Sally danced for Nona Beamer, Kent Ghirard as a Hula Nani, and hula dancer for the Barefoot in Paradise show in New York City during the 1964 World's Fair. Then, after returning to Hawaii, Sally continued her hula dancing career, dancing for Tevana, Tommy Sands, John Rolls, Danny Kaleikini & Manu Bentley. Sally's brother was Buddy Fo of the prolific harmonizing group The Invitations & her sister Mikilani Fo was a singer & musician, regarded till today, as one of the best Ukulele artists of all times and was recognized as one of best Ukulele artists at an Ukulele Festival gala several years ago. Sally and her family loved horses and rode horses for many, many years. It was a highlight of her entire family to see her riding in both the Aloha Week and Kamehameha Day parades. Sally was a horseback rider for a multitude of Pa'u riding units. Some of her fondest memories included the years she was Pa'u Princess for the islands of Oahu and Kaua'i. Since leaving the world of Hula & Horses, Sally & Ollie enjoyed doing all kinds of things together. They traveled extensively and enjoyed Ollie's Kamehameha Class of '56 monthly luncheons & kanikapila sessions, plus Sally was the assistant for Ollie's ukulele class at Koko Head District Park for many years. Sally also loved spending her time playing golf. Initially, it was the love of her life, Ollie that introduced her to the game. Sally & Ollie enjoyed golfing all over. Eventually, Sally joined various ladies golf clubs, to have fun and to have friends to play golf with. Sally was a member of the Olomana Womens club and then the Hawaiian Girls club. Golf brought her so much joy and gave her the opportunity to build so many meaningful friendships, that she truly cherished. The comradery Sally shared with her club ladies meant so much to her. Then, a true joy happened for Sally as she was able to inspire her grandson Cody to learn the game of golf while recovering from a basketball ankle injury, Cody began his golf journey with his Grandmother. Cody, learning from his Grandmother, became a wonderful golfer. Cody and Sally would play golf together at least once a week, and sometimes, up to three times a week! They shared an amazing bond on and off the golf course, and Cody playing golf with his Mid-Pacific Institute school team, meant the world to his Grandmother. It was truly one of her greatest joys.
