Edwin “Eddie” Sorenson
Edwin "Eddie" Sorenson, 95, died peacefully at home in Hilo on January 15, 2023. Born in Honolulu, he was a graduate of Punahou School and was a member of various Hawaii Island business organizations as well as the Hilo Yacht Club, Church of the Holy Apostles, and the Outrigger Canoe Club. After high school, he spent time in the U.S. Army and later began a long career working with heavy equipment, starting out with Theo H. Davies' Tractor and Implement Department as a mechanic, later joining the sales force. He also installed and serviced marine engines in aku boats. He held various positions with Theo H. Davies/Pacific Machinery, predominantly in the heavy equipment field. Eddie and his family moved to Hilo in 1972 when he became the branch manager of Pacific Machinery, a position he held until his retirement in 1988. Many in the industry affectionately called him "Mr. Caterpillar." Over the years, Eddie pursued his love of boats and cars. He raced dragsters at the old Kahuku airstrip. He raced boats in Ke'ehi Lagoon, Kane'ohe Bay, and other locales in the islands. He pulled many a water-skier behind his beloved Boston Whaler and often took friends and family fishing. Always the consummate gentleman, Eddie was also the embodiment of kindness, humility, patience and forgiveness. He deeply loved his family and friends. He was always the first to offer a handshake, a hug or a kiss on the cheek. Eddie's mantra was, "Can I help?". And he always did. Survived by his wife Cynthia; daughter Priscilla (David) Witt and their children, Lauren, Kelianne and Parker of California; daughter Shawnna Sorenson of California; stepdaughter Heidi Snow; nephews Scott (Kathy) Sorenson of 'Ewa Beach and Fred Sorenson of Kamuela; devoted caregivers Christine Stewart and Anu Victorino.
