Tired of the Midwest cold, Merle moved to Hawaii in 1956 with his wife Doris, after graduating from Bradley University and service in the U.S. Army. He earned a CPA certificate from the then Territory of Hawaii and spent his professional career with KPMG and its predecessors; he worked primarily in Hawaii but was also instrumental in establishing the firm's practice in Guam in the early 1960's.
Merle's civic engagement included service as a member of the City & County of Honolulu's Salary Commission, as a board member of the Kahala Community Association, and as a member of the Honolulu Chamber of Commerce's Public Health Committee. His love of travel led him to visit many countries in six continents (he only missed Antarctica–again, too cold). He also enjoyed the company of 15 Great Danes over 50 years, most recently his pal Freddie.
Merle is survived by his wife of 70 years, Doris Crow, daughters Tracy Jones (Patrick) and Leslie Crow (William Burke), and his three grandchildren (Ian, Michael, and Rachel).
Aloha Merle, rest peacefully.
