Richard Dean Allen passed away on February 10, 2023. Born in Dallas Center Iowa 1935. Graduated from Dallas Center H.S. in 1953, obtained a B.A. degree in Biology from Greenville College, Ill; a M.S. degree in Botany from the Univ of Ill; a Ph.D. in Cell Biology from Iowa State Univ; a Postdoc in Cell Biology at Harvard Univ. Moved to Oahu in 1969 taking a position in the Pacific Biomedical Research Center at the Univ of Hawaii as an Assoc Prof of Microbiology; worked as a prof and research scientist studying cellular membranes. He became a leading scientist in his field publishing over 100 papers in scientific journals in collaboration with colleagues. An avid gardener he turned the backyard of his Kailua home into a private botanical garden. Following over 30 years of service at the U of H, he spent his retirement traveling the globe visiting over 40 countries on six continents. An enthusiastic photographer, his photo books mailed to his family will be greatly missed. Survived by his two sons: Steven and Scott; daughters-in-law Kristine and Bupha; grandchildren: Kevin, Jessica, Truston, Tahlia, Lola and Charlie; sister: Miriam Jeran; niece and nephews.
