JR was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 30, 1973, and he grew up in Kailua on Oahu. He attended Le Jardin Academy and Punahou School, graduating in 1992. JR graduated from the University of Washington (UW) in 1996 with a Bachelor's degree in finance and marketing. JR worked in technology sales and later as a real estate investor.
A sports fan and a disciplined athlete himself, JR was an avid surfer who was sponsored at an early age. He also was recruited to be on the crew team at UW where he often served as the coxswain.
JR was a frugal minimalist but also generous. He was a kind gentleman, and he had a wise old soul and an infectious smile. He was true to himself and stuck to his own schedule, making the most of every day by doing what made him happy and enjoying those around him. He lived life to the fullest. One of JR's greatest joys were his friends, old and new.
JR is survived by his wife, Danielle Ellis-Andrews; his father, John R. Andrews, Sr., and wife Karen Studebaker Andrews; his mother, Marguerite Andrews; his sister, Mary Jung, and her husband, Michael Jung. JR is also survived by uncles, aunts and cousins. JR was predeceased by his sister, Laura Andrews.
