Betty Hanako Harimoto
Betty Hanako Harimoto passed away on January 13, 2023, at the age of 95 after suffering a stroke. She was born in Honolulu to Chieto and Haruko Tagawa and grew up with her two sisters in Moiliili and Kapahulu. Graduating from McKinley High School in 1945, she married her high school sweetheart, Walter Harimoto, in March 1947, and had four children. A long-time resident of Pearl City, she and her family traveled throughout Europe during Walter's 3-year Army tour in Frankfurt, Germany. Betty and Walter celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary in March 2022. A 100-word per minute typist and exceptional at the now lost art of shorthand, Betty worked as a secretary in various school offices and for the Air Force and Army before retiring in 1988. She enjoyed trips to Las Vegas, playing cards with her sisters, and in later years, playing Boggle and Upwords with her family. She treasured her family and friends, and embraced everyone she met, including total strangers who were often drawn to her. Betty was a very generous person, and made friends wherever she went. With her loving Walter ever at her side, she was known to bless those who were special to her with angel pins, and always had a handful of candy and a smile to share with all.
Betty is survived by her husband Walter; children Gayle, Deane (Dawn), and Lynne Nakamoto (Wesley); daughter-in-law Cheryl; 7 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and sisters Jane Chang and Alice Furumoto. She was predeceased by son Breene.
The family thanks the staff at the Villas at St. Francis for the exceptional care received by Betty. At Betty's request, no funeral will be held at this time. However, her family will gather to celebrate her life.
