Alex Yasukazu Uyeshiro
Alex Yasukazu Uyeshiro, a beloved and gentle man who built houses, grew beautiful plants, enjoyed golfing, and loved his family, died on January 1, 2018. He was 90 years old. Alex, or "Grampa" as he was known by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, could fix anything in the house. He was a skilled gardener whose saplings and flowering plants were treasured by friends and carnival plant booths alike. He built homes for his mother, his siblings, and his own family and helped with the stage at the Okinawan Festival as a member of Onna Sonjin Kai. He loved golf and playing with his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren. Alex was born to Makato and Anfuku Uyeshiro in Hakalau, Hawaii Island. He moved to Kailua as a boy and lived there all his life. He attended Iolani School, '46 and the University of Hawaii, '50. He then enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Korea and Tokyo. He worked at the Hawaii State Department of Labor from 1955 until his retirement in 1983. He is survived by his wife, Sally; sons, Robin (Donna Leong) and Mark; grandchildren; Lauren (Will Robinson) and Ashley Uyeshiro Simon (Scott Simon); three great-grandchildren, and brothers Drake and Ronald. He was predeceased by sisters Thelma Hu, Elaine, Joan Mauliola and brother Allen Ueshiro. We love and miss you Grampa! Private services will be held on March 31, 2018.
Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased
