Charles Merritt Peters, Jr., 85, passed away at home in Kailua on February 23rd.
Born on the island of Maui on February 5, 1926, he was the third of three children of Charles Merritt Peters and Mollie Kananipau'ole Akana Peters. Charles attended Kaunoa School, Maui High School and graduated from Valley Forge Military Academy. He attended several higher education institutions including Columbia University, UH Manoa, and American University, where he was captain of the swimming team and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology. He served in the Navy during WWII. He later became an executive with Chevron Oil USA. Throughout his life, Charles was an avid sports fan who followed virtually all sports and rarely missed watching a UH game. He was a long time member of Prince Kuhio Hawaiian Civic Club.
Services will be held on Tuesday March 1st at Kailua Christian Church (317 Manono Street). Visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00 am with services starting at 11:00 am. He will be interred at Punchbowl, National Cemetery of the Pacific at a later date.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Emily Wilson from Kalama'ula, Molokai, five children: Charles III, Christian, Wendy (Bear) Maher, Wilson "Manuwai" and Mollie (Frank) Fine; brother: Col. David M. Peters, and four grandchildren: Sima, Kava, Charles and Hope Fine.
