Sister M. Jeanette Joaquin
Sister M. Jeanette (Cecilia) Joaquin, O.S.F., 91, a Sister of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities, went home to God at St. Francis Convent, on September 12, after a lengthy illness. She was the daughter of the late Gumersindo and Filomena Barnacha Joaquin and was born at Schofield Barracks. Sister attended Leilehua High and St. Francis Convent schools, then entered the Sisters of St. Francis in 1950 and made her perpetual vows in 1955. She earned a Bachelor's degree at Chaminade College of Honolulu. After two years of catechetical work, Sister devoted the next 25 years to teaching in elementary schools in New Jersey, New York, and Hawaii. She spent a total of 31 years in the Diocese of Honolulu, teaching at Sacred Hearts School, Lahaina; Our Lady of Good Counsel, Pearl City; and St. Francis School, Honolulu. In the final 21 years of active ministry, Sister engaged in parish, pastoral and religious education ministries at St. Theresa (now Co-Cathedral) Parish, the Diocesan Office of Filipino Ministry, Molokai Catholic Community, and St. George Parish, Waimanalo, and was a volunteer at Kukui Gardens Community Center. Sister gained a reputation as an excellent Oahu tour guide, and she enjoyed cooking, photography, acrylic painting, and adult coloring pages. Sister was predeceased by her parents, her brothers, Amador (Helen) and Guillermo Joaquin, sister, Francisca (Raymond) Palomares, brother-in-law, George Repetti, and niece, Maile Repetti (John) Rogers. She is survived by a sister, Angelina Repetti. sister-in-law Dominga (Minga) Joaquin, and several (great) nieces and nephews, and the Sisters of St. Francis. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 22, at St. Francis Convent, 2715 Pamoa Road in Manoa Valley: Visitation begins 9:00 AM, Eulogy 10:45 AM, Mass of Christian Burial 11:00 AM, followed by reception.
