Marvallin Mokihana Kahalepuna KaluaMARVALLIN MOKIHANA KAHALEPUNA KALUA
86, affectionately known as "Aunty Lala", died on March 12, 2011. Born and raised in Pauoa, she was a 1942 graduate of McKinley High School. Growing up she trained and performed hula under Kumu Hulas' such as Henry M. Pa, George P. Mossman, Mama Rose K. Joshua, and Aunty Sally Woods. Mokihana worked for the State of Hawai'i as a Licensed Practical Nurse starting at the State Hospital in the mid-1950s, Kalihi Union Church in the 70s, then to Lanakila Mental Health before retiring. She was a member of the Royal Order of Kamehameha I Women's Auxiliary for many years, serving as its President and various other positions.
There are a few words that portrayed Mokihana: independent, elegant, graceful, and loving. She was self-reliant from a young age, and although widowed for 41 years, she always ensured her family was well taken cared for; Mokihana had an elegant style about her in speech, dress and mannerism; when she danced hula, it was with a style as taught exactly to her by her Kumus, with grace, charm, and at times- playfulness; and as a loving daughter, sibling, wife, mother, and grandmother- she was a person who gave unconditionally. To those who knew Mokihana, they will understand the true gift and meaning of what she brought to all of our lives.
Survived by her daughters, Patricia "Kaai" (Prince) Kekaulike, Marcella "Bozo" Kalama, Charlene "Kalena" (Rojelio) Rodrigues and Penny P. Kalua; brother, Alexander (Helene) Kahalepuna; sisters, Barbara "Kanani" (Gilbert) Lewis and Nancy Lum Won; nephews, David Kahalepuna and John "Johnny Boy" Pang; niece, Debbie Medeiros; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren.
Please, no flowers or donations as no services will be held by Mokihana's request for a private service.
For the past 19 years, Mokihana diligently exerted her time and energy in a "life saving" work of spreading the good news of God's Kingdom (Matthews 24:14). As one of Jehovah's Witnesses, she could be seen in the mornings sitting at a stonewall bench on Fort Street Mall with her bible, offering the Watchtower & Awake magazines. Please feel free to speak to one of Jehovah's Witnesses if you are concerned about the prevalence of wars and natural disasters, they will be happy to help you understand the turmoil we are facing, so that you may someday, help others. Mokihana now awaitsher resurrection.
Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased
