Chieno Sugihara passed peacefully at 105 years old on April 5, 2019. She was born on November 9, 1913 to Uichi and Mika Yamane and was the seventh child of thirteen children. Born and raised in Kalihi, she was among the inaugural class of Kalakaua Junior High School and graduated from McKinley High School. Chieno married Clarence Sugihara in 1939 when he was a medical student at Marquette University. In 1949 they returned to Hawaii when Clarence opened his allergy practice. Chieno loved to travel worldwide, volunteered with Kuakini Hospital Auxilliary for many years, enjoyed painting, and loved puttering around in the yard. To many of her friends, Chieno was like a mentor sharing her words of wisdom on life. She always looked forward to family gatherings and made sure that everyone was taken care of. Chieno often said she felt blessed but her family feels very blessed that they were a part of her life that was lived so well and so long. Chieno is survived by her children Dr. Jared Sugihara, Dr. Stuart Sugihara, Nina Ngo and Dr. Theodore Sugihara; nine grand- children; eighteen great-grand- children and her youngest brother Kosei Yamane. She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Clarence Sugihara, daughter Diane Yang and great-grand- son Andrew Miyashiro. A private service was held.
