W. PATRICK O'CONNOR February 6, 1932 ~ May 6, 2019 W. Patrick O'Connor, 87, passed away at home on May 6, surrounded by family. Raised in Kuli'ou'ou, he attended Punahou School, where he graduated in 1950. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of California at Berkeley. He earned his law degree from Hastings College of the Law. O'Connor began his Honolulu legal career as a deputy prosecutor. He served as an assistant U.S. attorney, as well as a U.S. commissioner. Following these years of public service, O'Connor entered private practice and also served as a Honolulu district judge from 1984 to 2002. He spent much of his youth at the Outrigger Canoe Club and when not in the ocean, he and his friends could most often be found competing in doubles beach volleyball tournaments. An avid sailor, his passion led him from California to Hawaii on several Trans-Pac races on the catamaran Aikane in the late 1950s. In 1961, O'Connor once again joined the Aikane crew to set sail on the journey of a lifetime a 10,000-mile cruise from Los Angeles to the Marquesas Islands, the Tuamotus Archipelago, Tahiti, Hawaii and Los Angeles. He later continued his sailing adventures with yearly outer island trips with friends. A member of the International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians, he had many years of adventure sailing with friends abroad. Known among friends as the "singing judge," he frequented popular piano bars. He also acted in several musicals. He is survived by his partner, My Sugane; two daughters, Christi O'Connor and Carrie O'Connor; two grandsons, Danny Smythe and Connor Smith; stepsister, Delphine Chloe and stepbrother, Warren Vilmaire. He is predeceased by two brothers, Dennis O'Connor Sr. and John Kevin O'Connor and stepbrother, Michael Vilmaire. Services will be held at 9:00 a.m. on July 6, 2019, at the Outrigger Canoe Club.
