Bob, 80, passed away peacefully at home in Waimanalo, HI on May 14, 2019. Born in Buffalo, New York, he received several degrees from Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana, a BS Agriculture, MS Genetics, Ph.D. Biophysics and Molecular Genetics. Also Post Doctoral Fellow, Department of Clinical Pathology at National Institute Heath, Bethesda, Maryland, NIH Postdoctoral Fellow at Scripps Clinic, La Jolla. CA, Postdoctoral Fellow, at Carnegie Institute, Washington, DC. He was a visionary, with knowledge that could view current technologies, combine with science, identify and develop key businesses to produce products that support food and fuel production by using waste products, which is important to society but not well understood by all. His famous quote "Wasting waste is wasteful". He has more then 70 publications in the fields of agriculture, aquaculture, waste management, resource recovery, resource planning, international economic development, genetics, molecular biology and nutrition. As a Certified Consultant for American Society of Agriculture, he completed more than 80 consultations in many parts of the world. A few of his accomplishments are: created and developed funding for the Aquaculture Program, University of CA Bodega Marine Lab., Bodega Bay, CA and developed technology and evaluated the economic for farming Maine lobsters. Director and VP, The Oceanic Institute, Waimanalo, HI, established a stable funding base and built the largest aquaculture research organization in the US. The team solved technical and economic problems which became the foundation for commercial shrimp farming business world wide. Awarded a grant by SBIR program of NSF for Development of a 2 stage immobilized cell bioreactor for conversion of organic waste to methane which is used in many anaerobic digestion systems in use today. As consultant to State of Hi, DBEDT, "A Plan and Program to Establish Aquaculture Businesses in Hawaii", was developed and also authored, the 1994 study of, "Ethanol production technologies and financial analysis for production in Hawaii". Founder and President, CEO of The Aina Institute, Waimanalo, HI, a 501 (C) 3 dedicated to create sustainable food and energy for HI. As Founder and Chief Technical Officer, of Clear Fuels Technology Inc., Aiea, Hi, a demonstration plant in Colorado for the production of renewable synthetic fuels from biomass was built with a $23.6 million grant from US DOE and matching funds. With all that, his best quality was to bring people together to share his life, not only with work but in the neighborhood and communities that he has lived. The world will miss him. He is survived by his wife Rose Calma, step mother Adrienne Shleser and brother Gary Shleser. Celebration of his life will be private.
