"I have had a wonderful life and feel grateful." Ko Miyataki lived life to its fullest. She passed away on August 11, 2019, age 76, at Hospice Hawaii Kailua. Ko is survived by her husband of 53 years, Glenn K. Miyataki; daughters Linn Reiko Pellarin (Federico) of Lyon, France and Sayuri "Sy" Frost (Ian) of San Francisco; dearly loved grandchildren, Julia and Alessandro Pellarin and Mieko Dimitroff; siblings Diane "Didi" Iwaoka (Wayne) and Neal Kanda (Lynette Lo Tom). Ko was born on October 6, 1942 in Pahala, Hawaii Island to Minoru and Nobuyo Kanda. She was a proud graduate of Kau High School, the University of Hawaii and Western Michigan University with a master's degree in counseling. She later earned her doctorate in education from the University of Hawaii. Ko's passions in life were family, especially her three grandchildren. She loved Hawaiian music, Saturday golf, Sunday movies with coke and popcorn, racquetball and the Denver Broncos. She traveled the world, but never strayed far from her roots in Pahala. She and Glenn lived in Nebraska and Colorado for a decade, returning to Hawaii in 1975 to raise their family. Her first job was counselor at Central Intermediate School. A career change led her to focus on development programs at the University of Hawaii Foundation, Kamehameha Schools Princess Bernice Pauahi Foundation and The Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific Foundation, where she served as president. After retirement in 2013, Ko helped organizations, including Lanakila Pacific, the Living Treasures of Hawaii program at Honpa Hongwanji, the Pacific Buddhist Academy and Hui Malama O Ke Kai Foundation. Ko was engaging and magnetic and believed that "a day without laughter is a day wasted." She enjoyed the many lifelong friends she made. Ko's life will be celebrated on Friday, August 23, at Honpa Hongwanji, 1727 Pali Highway. Visitation 10 am, service 11:30 am, reception to follow. Aloha attire, no flowers.
