Passed away on January 12, 2020. Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, Carol's love for the harp began as a young child when she asked her parents if she could take lessons. Unable to find a suitable harp teacher, they instead enrolled her in piano. In college Carol studied mathematics and computer science, eventually becoming a math teacher at Radford High School in Honolulu. Music remained in her heart and ultimately called her back to pursue it. During the summers of 1974 and 1975, Carol studied at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music which has the largest harp department in the world. In 1977 she went on to graduate with honors from the University of Southern California's School of Music. Her teachers are world-renowned; Susann McDonald founded the USA International Harp Competition and is one of the most important harp educators of the 20th Century. Her other teacher, De Wayne Fulton, was the only American to join the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. After graduation, Carol turned down a job to play in the National Symphony Orchestra to remain in Hawaii to look after her parents. She went on to become the 2nd harpist with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra for 10 years. Carol was a member of Flute a la Harpe, an Oahu-based group of professional musicians who played lots of Kama'aina and destination weddings. Carol performed at Kahala Resort and Willows Restaurant and at the Halekulani Sunday brunch for 29 years. She was also a part of the Honolulu Christmas Harp Ensemble which was comprised of 5 harpists. They played at private venues and hotels in Honolulu including The Royal Hawaiian, Princess Kaiulani, The Sheraton Waikiki and The Moana Surfrider Hotel. Carol was also proud to be part of the faculty at Punahou Music School in Manoa Valley for 17 years. She was the founder of the harp program where she taught students from grades K-12 as well as private lessons through 2019. Carol is survived by her niece Mari Keiko Gonzalez of East Hampton, New York; her nephew Joshua Samuel Mitsuo Weiner of Brooklyn, New York; and her nephew Justin Miyamoto Weiner and his wife Beth Foresta, also of Brooklyn.
