DR. FAY GILKEY CALKINS ALA'ILIMA

Distinguished Pacific author, political scientist, scholar and educator, Dr. Fay Gilkey Calkins Ala'ilima passed away peacefully at her home on Pia Street in Honolulu, Hawaii at 11:00 am on Sunday, August 1, 2010 at the age of eight-eight. Born of a US East Coast family with strong Puritan Quaker and Methodist traditions, Fay married her husband Le'iataualesa Vaiao Ala'ilima in January 1952 in Washington D.C. and committed her life to a Pacific community emerging from a colonial era. She will be remember for the many lives she touched through-out the Pacific with her stories, writings published and unpublished works (My Samoan Chief; Aggie Grey: A South Seas Saga, Samoa's Changing Chiefdom), teachings, love for traveling, good humor, keen insight and intelligence.

She is survived by her husband Vaiao, her two younger sisters, Harriet Hunter and Gladys Keidel, 7 children, 22 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren.
