Barbara Ann Abram Markesbery
Anyone who had the fortune of meeting and knowing Barbara Markesbery was one of the luckiest people on earth. Barbara was filled with grace and taught all of us what it means to live life joyfully and with wonder. Barbara Ann Abram Markesbery of Lexington, KY, and Honolulu, HI, aged 84, passed away from Alzheimer's disease on January 27, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents David and Marguerite Abram, husband, Dr. William Markesbery, and daughter Kendall. She is survived by her daughters Susanne (Michael) Arnold, and Allison (John) Robbins, her brother Theodore (Suzanne) Abram, her sister Catherine (John) Crowley, brother-in-law Harold (Junel) Markesbery, grandchildren John and Henry Arnold, Malia and WIlliam Robbins, long-term companion William Green, dozens of nieces, nephews and cousins and special caregiver Tamatha Clay. She was a graduate of Iowa State University, a Kappa Alpha Theta, worked as a nutritionist, co-authored a book, and placed in her age group every year she ran the Bluegrass 10,000. She converted to Catholicism in the 1970s and volunteered for many Catholic charities. She delighted in all people, zeroing in on what makes someone special and magnifying it. Barbara realized a lifelong dream to live part of her year in Honolulu, a place where she met her husband Bill in 1955, and deeply embraced the aloha spirit. Barbara wanted everyone to know how much she loved them. She would want them to celebrate life, love deeply, and always share God-given abilities to do good for others. The family would like to thank all who cared for her, especially the wonderful staff at The Homeplace in Midway, Patty Moffett of Hospice, and Tamatha Clay. Donations suggested to Sanders-Brown Center on Aging and the Honolulu Academy of Art. A funeral mass will be scheduled at the Newman Center, in Lexington, later in the year.
