GARY ISAMU KONDO
GARY ISAMU KONDO Gary Isamu Kondo passed peacefully away on June 11, 2011 at Queen's Medical Center. He was born February 24, 1947 in Honolulu. Son of the late Chiyokichi and Miyako Kondo, Gary grew up in the Mc Cully area where his family owned Kondo Auto Paint & Service and he attended Bingham Tract Elementary and Stevenson Intermediate. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1964 and the University of Hawaii in 1968 where he was an enthusiastic member of the Phi Kappa Pi fraternity. Gary went on to receive a doctorate of dental surgery at the University of Detroit where he graduated Cum Laude and was the recipient of a number of awards, including the clinical practitioner's award and the crown and bridge award. Upon graduation, he was inducted into both the Alpha Sigma Nu-National Jesuit Honor Society and the prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society in 1972. Dr. Kondo went on to receive residency training and a specialty certificate in Endodontics and served as a clinical instructor in the Department of Endodontics at the University of Detroit. Dr. Kondo had a tremendous impact on the lives of everyone who knew him both professionally and in business. After being in private practice in Michigan, he returned home to Hawaii in 1974 to join as a partner with Endodontic Associates, the largest endodontic group practice in Hawaii, and also served as an instructor in the Queen's Medical Center Dental Residency program from 1975-1990. For 30 years, he practiced as an endodontist in Hawaii. He was a driving force that helped shape Hawaii's dental industry as Trustee of the Hawaii Dental Association, President of the Honolulu County Dental Society, President of the Hawaii Independent Dental Alliance, President of the Hawaii Smile Centers, the entity that delivered Britesmile teeth whitening in Hawaii, American Dental Alliance, a dental practice management company, and finally as the President and CEO of Hawaii Dental Group, Hawaii Family Dental Centers, Hawaii's largest group dental practice serving 10 communities on four islands. Never content with the status quo, Dr. Kondo was also a visionary entrepreneur who founded a number of highly successful and timely businesses outside of his chosen profession. Among them were Hawaii Bio-Waste Systems over 21 years ago, which grew to become Hawaii's largest medical waste treatment contractor serving over a thousand of Hawaii's hospitals and medical facilities on all islands. Hawaii Bio-Waste Systems led to the formation of Honua Technologies, one of the first Act 221 qualified high technology businesses in Hawaii, which manufactures a non-incineration technology for medical, pharmaceutical, and low-level radioactive waste, and Honua Power, one of the first independent renewable energy power producers which is developing the first biomass gasification power plant on Oahu. A former member of the Board of the Hawaii Community Development Authority and a supporter of many political causes, Dr. Kondo gave back to his community as much as possible. Dr. Kondo was a strong supporter of local non-profits. He was also a generous contributor to his Alma Mater, Roosevelt High School, The University of Hawaii and University of Detroit Dental School. He was especially proud of his most recent contribution to Shriners Hospital, where he served as a member of the Friends Board. Dr. Kondo took great pride in conceiving of and launching the first children's dental facility at Shriners Hospital which will serve basic dental needs for children throughout Hawaii and the Pacific Rim. Amongst many interests, his favorites were golf, baseball and music. He was a devoted golfing member of Waialae Country Club for nearly 20 years, he founded the Hawaii Historical Baseball Society, and he regularly enjoyed Kanikapila with his friends and family.
