88, of Oahu, passed away peacefully January 10, 2022. He was born in Honolulu and graduated from Farrington HS class of 1951. He proudly served in the US military and retired after 20 plus years as Sergeant First Class in the US Army Band. He also retired from Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard as a machinist and played clarinet and marched as a proud member of the Royal Hawaiian Band for many years.While in the military, he traveled extensively all over the US, Europe and the Far East, and was stationed in Washington DC, Wuerzburg Germany, Seoul South Korea, Schofield Barracks and Fort Shafter Oahu, and his two favorites, Fort Jay Governors Island New York, NY, and Heidelberg Germany.
He was a talented musician (woodwinds, sax, guitar, drum major) and amazed us with his awesome rendition of Stars and Stripes Forever on his ukulele. He was old school; just a local boy from Liliha, Palama Settlement and Damon Tract. He loved the thrill of Vegas and he loved his sports; volleyball, football and especially boxing. He was a volleyball referee and organized and ran the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard volleyball league. He was a caring, gentle spirit and treasured his pets; over the years he had more than twelve dogs, various stray cats, a parakeet named Imelda, and a fat rabbit. He was a former member of the Elks Club, Oddfellows, the Model A Club of Hawaii, and frequently attended Army Old Timers reunions. He was a positive force in our lives, and a mighty river to his family.
Wilfred now joins his beloved wife Frances Duhaylonsod Munar. Dad was the youngest and the last of the original Munar siblings. He's survived by sons Wilfred Jr (Grace), Rodney (Debra), Douglas (Ivy) and daughters Marla Delovio (Andrew), Prisca Munar, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday March 7 at Mililani Memorial Park Mortuary, Mauka Chapel, Mililani. Visitation from 5 pm, service from 6 to 8 pm. Burial with military honors on Tuesday March 8 at 10 am at Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery, Kanehoe. Aloha attire, vaccination card requested.
