He was a 1958 graduate of Punahou School, and college followed with four years at Cal State University, Long Beach. Upon returning home to Hawai'i, he later served as the president of the Punahou Alumni Association, was a founding member of the Imu Gang Emeritus, and recognized with an Old School Award.
Buddy formed his labor and industrial relations firm, McGuire & Associates, and for over 30 years was a highly respected labor relations specialist for numerous firms in Hawai'i.
His passion for the ocean was a constant throughout his life from his early years of surfing, fishing and diving in Maunalua Bay, paddling for Outrigger Canoe Club, to voyaging aboard Hokule'a and subsequently serving as a board member and kupuna to the keiki at Kanehunamoku Voyaging Academy.
Buddy embraced his Hawaiian culture, adored Hawaiian music, and was a senior member of Mamaka 'Aialo, a club dedicated to promote, develop, and perpetuate the food and eating customs of Hawai'i and the Pacific.
He is survived by his son Alika, daughter Lilia, and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Thurston Memorial Chapel at Punahou School on Saturday, September 17, 2022, visitation at 2:00pm, service at 3:00pm. The family requests the use of masks or face coverings during the services. In lieu of flowers, donations to honor his life may be made to Kanehunamoku Voyaging Academy, 47-705 Kamehameha Highway, Unit A, Kane'ohe, HI 96744.
