He graduated from Komozawa University in Japanese Language & Literature and later studied Religion & Linguistics at the University of Hawaii.
He devoted his life to the Soto Zen sect of Buddhism as a minister, rising to Bishop of Soto Mission of Hawaii in 1997 and retired in 2008. During his 56 year career with Soto Mission, he also served as a Japanese language teacher and was very active with the Hawaii Japanese Language School Association (Hawaii Kyoikukai).
He is predeceased by his brother Rev. Daiken Machida; and his sisters & their husbands, Shoji & Hanako Ishida, and Rev. Homei and Mrs Chieko Hayashi. He is survived by his wife, Violet Aiko; sister-in-law Yoko Machida; brothers Yasuhiro (Masako), Akifumi (Hanako), Rev. Shinzen Fukazawa (Kikue), Michio Asano (Tatsuko); and many nieces, nephews and their families.
The funeral will be held on Sunday, May 7, 2023 at Soto Mission of Hawaii, 1708 Nuuanu Avenue. Visitation 2:00 pm; Service 3:00 pm.
