John Andrew McCurdy Jr., M.D., 66, of Honolulu died on Friday, September 30th. He was born in Kingsville, TX on July 17, 1945. He graduated with a B.A. in chemistry from Duke University in Durham, NC in 1967 and then earned an M.D. from The Bowman Gray School of Medicine (now the Wake Forest University School of Medicine) in 1971. He completed a general surgery internship at Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco, CA and then completed a residency in Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery at Madigan Army Hospital in Fort Lewis, WA. After serving as a staff surgeon at Tripler Army Hospital, he was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1979. Dr. McCurdy began a private practice in Maui which soon expanded to Honolulu. He quickly became an internationally renowned authority in cosmetic surgery, keynoting many medical conferences and authoring numerous facial cosmetic surgery books and publications. He was a luminary in the field of facial plastic surgery for the Asian patient and authored the acclaimed medical textbook Cosmetic Surgery of the Asian Face. Dr. McCurdy was certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic Surgery, the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery. John was a brilliant, generous, witty, loving man with a boisterous sense of humor. He is preceded in death by his father, Lt. Col. John A McCurdy Sr and nephew Ens. Robert R. McCurdy. Survivors include his mother Elizabeth S. McCurdy of Austin, TX, wife Adele Casaschi, Ph.D. of Honolulu, brother Robert L. McCurdy of Austin, TX, sister Karen Montee of Pensacola, FL. His children are John A. McCurdy III, of Cornelius, NC, Elizabeth McCurdy Hueman, M.D. of Fayetteville, NC and John Inoru McCurdy of Japan. Dr. McCurdy also had 2 nieces, 1 nephew and 3 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, TX on Friday, October 21 at 11:30am.
