BERNARD SEISO AKAMINE
Bernard Seiso Akamine's departure from his earthly home on April 2, 2012, was tender and gentle. A veteran of the WWII 100th Infantry Battalion, Company B, he retired from the Engineering Department at Hawaiian Regent Hotel, and spent his retirement days occupied with various projects and volunteer activities. A member of the 100th Infantry Battalion Veterans organization, he served in many capacities, most recently as a volunteer docent at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Punchbowl.
He was born in the Waipio Peninsula area near West Loch, Oahu, to Shojiro and Kame Akamine on November 29, 1922, and enjoyed life to the fullest. When he could no longer work on his outdoor hobbies, he absorbed his time by writing his memoirs, reading and listening to music. Always thoughtful and ready to serve, he willed his body to the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine, where he is now teaching a new generation of medical professionals.
Survived by wife, Jeanette Setsuko (Arashiro) Akamine; son, Barton; daughters Drusilla (Stanley) Tanaka, Candace (Karl) Sakuda; brother, George Shigeru; sisters Violet Toyoko Tomihama, Betty Chiyoko (Gerald) Yee, Nancy Kimie (Bert) Nakayama of Huntington Beach, California, and grand-children, Grant Sato; Cecilee, Tyler and Carolee Tanaka; Brandyn Akamine; Kari and Kelly Sakuda; nephews, nieces, and cousins.
