CHARLES TOWNSEND WALLISCHARLES TOWNSEND WALLIS HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. - Charles Townsend Wallis of Hendersonville, N.C., died in Asheville, N.C., Friday, May 17, 2013, after a brief illness. He was 85. Mr. Wallis was born November 14, 1927, in Asheville, N.C., to George Marsden Wallis and Etta Beatrice Dillingham Wallis. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Alice Johnson Wallis (November 4, 1929-March 18, 2012) after 60 years of marriage; his brother George Marsden Wallis, Jr., of Arcadia, Fla.; and his sister Margaret Wallis Haile of Orlando, Fla. After a brief stint in the U.S. Navy, Mr. Wallis graduated from the University of Florida, Gainesville, Fla. In 1950, upon the urging of his uncle, Dr. Samuel R. Wallis of Lihue, Charles moved to Hawaii to work in the business of growing sugar cane. In 1953, he graduated from the Hawaii Sugar Planters Association Trainee program. While attending school in Honolulu he met and married his wife Alice Rae Johnson, originally of Seattle, Wash., via San Pedro, Calif., in 1952. Mr. Wallis worked for several Amfac sugar cane companies in the islands including Lihue Plantation and Kekaha Sugar on Kauai, and Puna Sugar on the Big Island. In 1981 he transitioned to growing papaya on the Big Island, starting with Puna Papaya and subsequent companies before retiring in 1991 after 41 years. Mr. Wallis was active in many business and community organizations in Hawaii including the Boy and Girl Scouts, Rotary Clubs, and being named Papaya Man of the Year in 1991 by the Papaya Administrative Committee. Mr. Wallis and his wife then moved to the Mainland, eventually settling in Weaverville, N.C. They enjoyed traveling, visiting all 50 states and several Canadian provinces, and taking numerous cruises. They also remained active in several community organizations. He is survived by his son Richard Elliott Wallis of Honolulu; niece Rebecca Haile Davis and husband Bill of Celebration, Fla.; niece Marcille Wallis and husband Greg McGraff of Port Charlotte, Fla.; nephew George Marsden Wallis III and wife Shelia of Smyrna, Tenn.; and many cousins both in Hawaii and the U.S. Mainland.
