EMALIA ALEXANDRA BROWN GUARDEMALIA ALEXANDRA BROWN GUARD 42, of Paia died peacefully Monday, February 10th, at home with her family. She is survived by her husband J. B. Guard IV, son Kahalakea Guard, parents Brooke Baird Brown, Hilary and Zadoc White Brown Jr., brother Zadoc White Brown III, stepbrothers Billy, Loch, and Hunter Eggers, grandmother Virginia Lowrey Brown, and many nieces and nephews. Emalia was born in San Francisco but grew up in Hawaii, primarily on Maui. She attended Lihikai Elementary School and graduated from Seabury Hall, class of '89. Emalia attended the University of Vermont, graduated from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and later received a master's degree from San Francisco State University in exercise kinesiology. She was a member of the American College of Sports Medicine as well as a member of the Daughters of Hawaii. Emalia cherished her Hawaiian heritage and was a life-long student of Hawaiian culture, music, and language. A talented athlete, Emalia played tennis at Seabury and was the school's first All-State high school selection for volleyball. After college, Em paddled for Hawaiian Canoe Club and with her husband, J. B. Guard helped coach Seabury's first canoe club. She was a fitness instructor at the Kahului YMCA before becoming the P. E. teacher at Seabury Hall. She was a true role model for the many student-athletes who loved her. Ask anyone who met her and they would tell you Emalia always had a smile on her face. She was gracious, good-natured, and wonderfully easy to be with. She laughed generously and often, and her wit and sense of fun were contagious. The love she held for her husband and son were inspirational in ordinary times and superhuman during her battle with cancer. Emalia is one of those people who stay with you always. There are few lights that shine as brightly, yet it's hard to summarize a woman whose focus was the real enjoyment of simple things. You never needed to tell her to stop and smell the flowers: she did it her whole life. A celebration of Emalia's life was held at Hawaiian Canoe Club at 8:30 am and at Seabury Hall at 2:30 pm on Saturday, February 22nd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to an educational fund for Emalia's son, Kahalakea Guard: Via Paypal @ www.teamemalia.com Or via check: Kahalakea Guard P.O. Box 791920 Paia, HI 96779
