MASATO "LEFTY" KATEKARUMASATO LEFTY KATEKARU October 1, 1924 - April 8, 2014 89, of Aiea passed away peacefully at Pali Momi Medical Center. Born in Ewa and raised in Waianae. One of seven children to Kame and Uto Katekaru who immigrated from Okinawa. He was an Army veteran and retired from the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard with 39 years of service. Enjoyed his retirement taking up ballroom dancing, ceramic classes, gardening, bowling, and keyboard lessons. Up to the time of his passing, he was bowling with the Aiea Makule Bowling League at Aiea Bowl. Enjoyed traveling to Japan, Okinawa, Canada, California, New York, and Las Vegas and several cruises. Belonged to the Hawaii United Okinawa Association and was a member of the Nishihara Chojin Kai where he shared his love of playing the keyboard at the annual New Year's party. He was recognized as the clubs Uchinanchu of the Year Honoree this past January. He is survived by wife, Haruye Katekaru, son, Lance (Maile) Katekaru, daughter, Cora (Jonathan) Cho and grand daughters Stephanie and Sherilyn Cho and Nicole Katekaru. Also survived by brother Herbert (Deanna) Katekaru, sisters Yoshie (Harry) Asato and Kay Shimabukuro. Precedent in death daughter, Jessie Katekaru and brother, Luke Katekaru. He lived a wonderful life full of love and laughter surrounded by his family and friends. Private services were held.
