Michael Stephen Marquez “Smokey†Schotz, 36, of Kailua-Kona, a surf instructor and waterman, died in Kona Community Hospital. He was born in San Diego. He is survived by mother Gretchen Strong; father Barry; brother Brian; hanai brothers Paul and Daniel Hofelich, Charles David and Jason Scroggin; and hanai sisters Bridgette Hempster and Julia Kempe.
