JERRY LAFAELE SCANLAN
JERRY LAFAELE SCANLAN Jerry Lafaele Scanlan of Kaneohe, HI and Phoenix, Az. passed away on Wednesday, July 8 at Queen's Hospital in Honolulu. He was 58. Jerry was born on January 4, 1957 (in Honolulu). He attended Halawa Elementary and August Ahrens Elementary before attending 'Iolani School and graduating in 1975. He went on to the University of Hawai'i where he excelled at football eventually playing for the Washington Redskins of the NFL where a very promising career was cut short by a neck injury. Jerry worked for many years in the bar and restaurant industry. He also worked in the fashion industry, primarily in New York City, where he managed the flagship store of Casual Male that caters to big and tall men. Jerry was most recently working on a clothing design called Upolu Point that was intended to solidify the connection between Samoa and Hawai'i. His father, Jerry Rafael Scanlan, and mother, Lamala are both deceased, along with his brothers Joe and Leonard (Haaheo), and his sister Ailua (Tony Schwartz). Surviving family include sisters Maude (also known as Moki) and Mavis (Sam Palakiko, deceased), and his brother Tafu. He leaves behind 19 nieces and nephews and numerous grand nieces and nephews. Services will be held on Sunday, August 2, at St. Alban's Chapel ('Iolani School). Viewing begins at 2:30 and service at 4:30 with refreshments to follow. Parking is available in the Kamoku St. structure. A second gathering will be held from 4:00 to sunset on Monday, August 3, at Zablan Beach in Nanakuli for the scattering of ashes.
