ROBERT “BOBBY” KAU
$nameROBERT BOBBY KAU April 14, 1922 - October 15, 2015 Bobby Kau, 93, passed away peacefully, having lived a full life with grace, honor, humility, good humor and concern for others. He was a highly successful insurance agent with John Hancock for over 50 years. He grew up in Palama, the youngest of 10 children, and graduated from Farrington High School. A basketball superstar and team captain at the University of Hawaii in the '40s, he was dubbed the "Rainbow Flash" for his "phenomenal" abilities. Sportswriters called him "one of the most brilliant dribblers and playmakers in UH basketball history." He was inducted into the UH Sports Hall of Honor in 1988. He also coached basketball at Iolani from 1955-60. Equally passionate about golf, he was fond of saying, "I only play golf on days that end with "y." He was a Golden Senior member of Waialae Country Club and had 8 holes-in-one. He is survived by his beloved wife, Violet Leong Yee Kau, children Kitty Woo (Andrew), Sandra Lee, Bennet Kau (Elizabeth), step-daughters Caroline Ingersoll (Richard), Jacqueline Reber (David), Gwendoline Coolidge (Charles), 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He will be remembered dearly in their hearts. Memorial service on Wed. Nov. 18, 11:30am, Diamond Head Memorial Chapel. Visitation 10:30-11:30. Donations in Bobby's memory may be made to Palama Settlement or KSLC/Hi'olani, Kahala Nui.
