CLARA KIM AMUNDSENClara Kim Amundsen, 99, passed away peacefully in Honolulu on January 23, 2016. She was born in Honolulu on August 29, 1916. She was a graduate of Roosevelt High School and the University of Hawaii, where she received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees. She was outstanding in journalism and debate in high school and college and was the only girl at the university to qualify for the inter-collegiate varsity debate team. At the onset of World War II, and wanting to help with the war effort, she volunteered at Pearl Harbor, where she worked at the naval supply depot throughout the war. Clara enjoyed a fulfilling career with the Department of Education. She taught briefly at Nanaikapono School, before becoming vice-principal at Kapalama School and then, Lincoln School. She moved on to serve for 10 years as principal of Wailupe Valley School, before retiring in 1979. She was an active member of Soroptimist International of Honolulu. In retirement, Clara continued to enjoy visiting her family, traveling, reading, and keeping up with her favorite sports teams. She is survived by daughter, Karlene Gulick (Thomas); grand- children Thomas Gulick, Carrie Hastings (Charles), Nancy Wiens (Gregory); great-grandchildren George and Koa Hastings, Tristan and Kai Wiens; brother Earl Kim; nieces and nephews. In keeping with her desire to continue teaching, she is a participant in the University of Hawaii Medical School's Willed Body Program. Private Services.
