KIYOSHI IKEDA
KIYOSHI IKEDA 4/5/28 2/18/16 Emeritus Professor, Kiyoshi Ikeda, at age 87 passed away peacefully on 2/18/16 at Kuakini Geriatric Center, Hale Pulama Mau, where he had been under their tender care for his Parkinson's condition. Kiyoshi was born on Ewa Plantation, the youngest of seven children to Kiyuji and Yoshiyo Ikeda, who had emigrated from Niigata, Japan. He is survived by his wife, Jane; son, Jaime and granddaughter, Aya; and, daughter, Naomi, son-in-law, Dominic, and grandson, Carlton Chow. A son, John, predeceased Kiyoshi. Kiyoshi attended Ewa Elementary School and Waipahu High School. He was fortunate to be able to go on for further education at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (through financial assistance and part-time work in the U.H. Cafeteria) where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Sociology. While still working on his Master's degree, Kiyoshi was drafted into the U.S. Army and served his country during the Korean War. He then left for Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois after completing his service time in the Army and receiving a Master's degree in Sociology to pursue his Ph.D. in Sociology. While still a Ph.D. student at Northwestern University, Kiyoshi taught at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, commuting between Madison and Evanston until completing work and receiving the Doctorate of Sociology degree. From 1960-1976 Kiyoshi found himself enjoying teaching and interacting with students at a liberal arts college called Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. However, across the Pacific he heard and kept hearing Hawaii calling him back home. Kiyoshi realized that it was time to go back to his roots, to Hawaii, and share his knowledge and experience. Once home, Kiyoshi Ikeda became deeply involved in the Sociology dept., the U.H. Journal of Social Process in Hawaii, other campus projects, the Hawaii Historic Review of Places, and was an ardent supporter of the Preservation of Historic Ewa project.A memorial service for Kiyoshi was held at the Ewa Community Church in early March with the presence of his family and ohana. A service in celebration of Kiyoshi's life will be held at the University of Hawaii at Manoa Campus Center Executive Dining room on April 13, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. Aloha attire. In lieu of flowers or koden, donations suggested be made to UH Foundation Na Hoaloha O Sociology (Friends of Sociology) or the Historic Hawaii Foundation.

Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased
