Dr. Eleanore Green Akina
DR. ELEANORE GREEN AKINA It is with a great sense of sadness that the family and friends of Dr. Eleanore Green Akina note her passing at her home on March 29 of this year. Dr. Eleanore Akina was educated at Gloucester High School (New Jersey). Swarthmore College and the University of Pennsylvania medical school She met her husband to be Dr. Henry C. Akina, while a resident at The Queens Hospital in Honolulu After a brief medical residence in New York she married him, in New Jersey. She came to Honolulu thinking that it was more rural than it was even in the 1940's. Previously she had been a missionary doctor in Newfoundland, before it was Canada. She remained married to Henry C. Akina for 12 years,before they divorced and she went to live on the windward side of Oahu, where she devoted herself to taking care of her parents. She remained single to the point that she was often asked if she would get back together with Dr. Henry C. Akina such speculation was silenced in the late 70s when he met his demise. She worked for the Queen Emma Clinics and ran Employee Health at Queen"s for a number of years with her specialty being internal medicine. After that she changed her specialty to child psychiatry. She was one of Dr. Jack McDermott's star pupils having received credit on a paper submitted by Dr.McDermott. She remained in private practice until her retirement in the year 2000. In the 1980's Eleanore, a woman of great faith, was ordained a deacon in the Episcopal Church serving alongside the Reverend Jack Shoemaker and his successors at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Kailua. Here, even in her 90's, she made a considerable impact and re-took the Education for Ministry course until her convalescence prevented it. Eleanore was quite musical as well. Playing piano and later the organ. She volunteered reading music backstage for Hawaii Opera Theatre as long as she could. She was a member of The Order of the Eastern Star, the PEO society of Hawaii. The Hawaii Opera Theatre, and the Bishop and Honolulu Museums.. She is survived by a son Henry Green Akina, a nephew: Harold LeRoy Beyer of Panama City, Florida. Two Hanai daughters: Katherine Lerps, and Clarice Cornet, and many godchildren. A Memorial Service is planned at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Kailua, at 10am on Saturday April 16. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Hawaii Opera Theatre, Emmanuel Episcopal Church, or the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaii.
