Dr. Nesanet Senaite Mitiku

NESANET SENAITE MITIKU September 1, 1975 - September 24, 2015 40, born in Ithaca, New York and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, passed away on September 24, 2015 after a two year battle with cancer. A brilliant artistic and scientific mind, Nesanet achieved excellence in her academic and extracurricular pursuits from a young age. While attending the University Laboratory School, Nesanet performed as a violinist with the Hawaii Youth Symphony, sang with various select choirs, and won multiple awards for her paintings, including the Kaha Ki'i Congressional Art Competition. She represented Hawaii at the America's Junior Miss Scholarship Competition and was also selected as a National Science Foundation Pacific Region Young Scholar. Nesanet continued her pursuit of scientific study, completing her undergraduate degree in Environmental Engineering at Stanford University where she subsequently attained both a medical degree and PhD in Genetics. She specialized in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Washington and received clinical and research grants from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to pursue advanced training in MS. Upon completion of her residency and fellowship, Nesanet accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine and Neurology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City where she focused her research and clinical work on MS with the goal of creating new and improved treatments for the disease.
