James Donald Abts
9/23/1928 -12/20/2016 James Donald (Jim) Abts passed away in Honolulu on December 20, 2016. He was born to Anthony Henry Abts and Margaret Hayden Abts in Belden, Nebraska and spent his formative years in Washington and Oregon. He entered the Army during WWII , served in General MacArthur's command and was a veteran of Korea and Vietnam. His final assignment was Inspector General of the Army component of the U.S Southern Command in the Panama Canal Zone. Following his retirement from the Army as a Colonel he worked for the U.S. General Accounting Office as Foreign Military Affairs Analyst. Jim was a published political cartoonist and caricaturist and authored a historical novel of the fall of Bataan in the Philippines. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Patricia Hurd Abts, and children Leigh Abts Ketterman (Sam), Susan, Matthew, Theresa (Lindee Reese ) and Martin (Sequoia) Abts, grandchildren Alexa, Luke, Colleen and Gabriel Brooks and Jake Abts and great granddaughter Azalea Brooks. Jim was preceded in death by their youngest son John Kennedy Abts. His commanding presence, wry wit, brilliance and sense of humor made an indelible impression on those who knew and loved him. He will be sorely missed. The family would like to thank his care team: Dr. Jeffrey Berenberg, Pat Nishimoto, Hospice of Hawaii staff especially Joey, Candace and Anna as well as Angela Lin for their compassionate and expert care.
