Passed away peacefully at his home in Honolulu on December 14, 2010 surrounded by his family. Dr. Yamada was born in Honokaa, HI.
He graduated from McKinley High School and attended the University of Hawaii, Manoa. When World War II started, he joined the Varsity Victory Volunteers, and later served in the 442 Regiment of the U.S. Army as a Staff Sergeant for which he received several military commendations.
Dr. Yamada graduated from the University of Wisconsin and went on to receive his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University. His medical career spanned over 40 years: he started with a solo practice, then was a member of the Central Medical Clinic, and last practiced as an administrative physician at Maluhia Hospital. Dr. Yamada was on staff at Queen's Medical Center, St. Francis Medical Center, and Kuakini Medical Center. At Kuakini Medical Center he volunteered extensively by serving on numerous medical committees and was Chief of Staff. Dr. Yamada also was an adjunct professor at the John A. Burns School of Medicine, was an original member of Pacific Health Care and was an author of several published medical research articles.
He is survived by his wife Alberta; children Tanya, Monica (Antonio Benetti), Trina and Stuart; grandchildren David, Christian and Katie; brothers Yoshitsugu (Edith) Yamada, Maurice (Aileen) Iha and Thomas (Nancy) Iha; and sisters Maureen Chong and Jocelyn (Richard) Nishihara. His brother Yoshikazu Yamada (Mitsuye) predeceased him. Dr. Yamada is also survived by sisters-in-law Loretta Conchee and Juanita Tom; brother-in-law, Larry Tom; nume-rous nieces and nephews, and hanai daughter Kinue Miki & hanai grandchildren Patrick, Stephanie and Jason Miki.
A celebration of his life will be held at the Oahu Cemetery Chapel, 2162 Nuuanu Avenue on January 15, 2011. Visitation begins at 2:00 p.m. followed by a brief program commencing at 2:30 p.m. Aloha attire is preferred.
Per Dr. Yamada's wishes, no flowers, wreaths or koden. Donations may be made to the "Edward Y. Yamada, M.D. Endowment Fund" through Kuakini Foundation.
