John William Thornton, 84, of Honolulu, a retired Department of State foreign services officer at Washington, D.C., and Army Corps veteran, died in Kaneohe. He was born in Mobile, Ala. He is survived by daughter Josephine "Jody" Smith, hanai daughter Rose Marghi, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Private services.
