Herbert Takao Hirata, 83, of Hono-lulu, a retired National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration chief observationist and Army veteran, died at home. He was born in Honolulu. He is survived by wife Jane Y., son Colin T., daughters Li Ann T. Wada and Faye S. Ogoshi, brother Harry, stepbrother Gary, stepsister Gail Kanda and six grandchildren. Private services.
